Ryanair offers two cabin baggage options.
The free bag
The free bag comes with every ticket. It must measure no more than 40x30x20cm and must fit under the seat in front of you. There’s no official weight limit. In practice, this means a small backpack or a structured tote, not a wheeled cabin case. Ryanair updated its free bag dimensions in August/September 2025: the old limit was 40x25x20cm, the new limit is 40x30x20cm. The Priority bag
The Priority bag is available with Priority boarding or higher fare tiers. It allows a second bag of up to 55x40x20cm, weighing no more than 10kg, which can go in the overhead locker. Priority passengers also keep the right to bring the free smaller bag under the seat.
How the gate check works
Ryanair places metal bag sizers at the departure gate. If your bag slides into the frame, you board. If it doesn’t, you pay. There’s no negotiation at the gate once a bag fails the sizer test, and staff cannot override the charge.
Ryanair’s gate check is not a formality. On busy routes out of Stansted, Dublin, and Barcelona, agents measure bags at a physical size template. Any bag that does not drop in freely is charged the gate rate, which is significantly higher than the pre-purchased online price. Measure your bag at home before you travel.
Not every passenger is checked. Gate staff typically target bags that look oversized, have bulging sides, or are visibly wider than a standard laptop bag. If your bag looks borderline, expect it to be tested. The bag sizer is a fixed metal frame with no give. There’s no grace margin for bags that are close but not quite within the allowed dimensions.

In November 2025, Ryanair raised the per-bag bonus for gate staff who catch non-compliant luggage, from €1.50 to €2.50 per bag. The monthly cap on these earnings was also removed. Staff now have a stronger financial incentive than before to use the sizer on any bag that looks borderline. Passengers who got through with slightly oversized bags in 2024 shouldn’t assume they’ll continue to do so. The written bag policy hasn’t changed, but the enforcement has.
Does Ryanair weigh hand luggage?
The free bag has no stated weight limit and isn’t routinely weighed at the gate. The Priority bag is capped at 10kg, but weight checks are inconsistent.
