Virgin Atlantic Name Change Fee: Why There Isn’t One

Virgin Atlantic name change fee: a passport, the document a name correction has to match

Published 13 September 2026 | Updated 13 September 2026 by Kate Acaster

There’s no Virgin Atlantic name change fee, because Virgin Atlantic doesn’t let you put a different passenger’s name on an existing ticket at all. Fixing a genuine spelling mistake in your own details is free. Handing your seat to someone else isn’t on offer, except in one specific case: a package holiday booked through an agent.

What counts as a correction, not a change

Virgin Atlantic draws a hard line between two things that sound similar. A correction fixes an error in the name of the person actually flying: a misspelling, a missing middle name, the wrong title. A change swaps in a different person entirely. The first is free. The second, on a flight-only booking, doesn’t exist as an option, whatever you’re willing to pay.

Correcting a name on your Virgin Atlantic booking

Under Virgin Atlantic’s Conditions of Carriage, a correction has to be made at least two hours before your scheduled departure, through Virgin Atlantic directly or the agent who made your booking. There’s no online self-service form for this. It goes through a person, which is also how the airline checks the correction is genuine rather than a swap in disguise.

What happens
Spelling mistake or wrong title
Free, at least 2 hours before departure
Missing or extra middle name
Free, same process
Transferring a flight-only ticket to someone else
Not permitted, at any price
Transferring a package holiday booking
Possible, with your provider’s agreement and a fee they set

Virgin Atlantic’s own name-correction policy allows a surname correction of up to three characters to bring it in line with your passport. Anything bigger, such as a completely different surname, needs extra sign-off, so contact the airline directly rather than assuming a small edit online will cover it.

Why you can’t just pay to change the name to someone else

Virgin Atlantic’s Conditions of Carriage are direct about this: “If you are the Passenger named on the Ticket, only you can travel on it,” and “You cannot transfer your Ticket to someone else.” A flight-only Virgin Atlantic ticket belongs to the person who booked it, from booking to boarding. That’s a stricter position than budget airlines that charge a fee to swap the passenger over. Virgin Atlantic isn’t pricing this high. It simply isn’t offering it.

“Most airlines treat a name change as a pricing problem, solvable if you pay enough. This airline treats it as an identity problem instead: the ticket belongs to the person who booked it, not to the booking itself, and no fee changes that. If you’ve booked under the wrong details, check whether a change is even possible before you assume money will fix it.”

The one exception: package holidays

The exception sits in UK law, not in Virgin Atlantic’s own booking conditions. If you booked a package holiday, for example through a tour operator or travel agent, you may have a right to transfer the whole booking to someone else. That right comes from regulation 9 of the Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements Regulations 2018.

Reading the terms of a package holiday booking, where a transfer to someone else may be possible for a fee
The right to transfer a package holiday to someone else comes from legislation, not from Virgin Atlantic’s own booking conditions.

Read the conditions attached to your specific package before assuming the transfer is simple. A Virgin Holidays package and a flight bought directly from Virgin Atlantic run on different rules entirely, and only the package carries this statutory right.

Give the organiser reasonable notice, and seven days or more before departure always counts as reasonable. The new traveller has to meet the same booking conditions you did, and the organiser can charge an administration fee, but only to cover its actual cost. Virgin Atlantic doesn’t publish a fixed figure for this anywhere, since it depends on what your provider actually incurs. Ask your travel agent or Virgin Holidays directly before you assume it’s free, or assume it’s expensive.

What happens if you don’t fix it before you fly

Airline staff check that the name on your ticket matches your passport or photo ID before you board. A minor spelling difference is unlikely to cause a problem on its own, but a genuine mismatch can lead to boarding being refused at the gate or check-in desk, at the airline’s discretion. Fix a known mistake as early as possible rather than waiting until departure day.

Is it ever simpler to just book again?

For a genuine spelling mistake, no. The correction is free, so cancelling and starting again only adds Virgin Atlantic’s normal cancellation terms for no benefit. For a full change of passenger on a flight-only ticket, there’s no fee route to fall back on. The realistic options are a fresh booking in the correct passenger’s name, or cancelling the original booking first if the fare allows a refund. Check your fare conditions before assuming a refund is available. Many of Virgin Atlantic’s cheaper fares aren’t refundable.

Airport terminal busy with travellers, deciding whether a fresh booking is simpler than trying to change a name
With no fee route to change a passenger’s name, a fresh booking is often the only realistic option.

Compare the cost of a new one-way fare against your existing booking’s cancellation terms before deciding. On a non-refundable fare, cancelling first usually makes the fresh booking more expensive, not less.

How this compares to other airlines

Most budget carriers treat a full change of passenger as something you can simply pay for. easyJet, Ryanair, Jet2 and TUI all charge a fee to swap who’s flying on a booking. British Airways sits with Virgin Atlantic on the other side of that line: neither offers a paid route to change who’s flying on a flight-only ticket, only a free correction for a genuine mistake.

Virgin Atlantic name change fee: FAQs

Does Virgin Atlantic charge a fee to change a name on a ticket?

No, because it doesn’t let a different passenger take over a flight-only ticket at any price. A genuine mistake in your own details is corrected free instead.

Can you transfer a Virgin Atlantic ticket to someone else?

Not on a flight-only booking. Virgin Atlantic’s Conditions of Carriage state the ticket cannot be transferred to another person, with no fee route around it.

Is a spelling correction on a Virgin Atlantic ticket free?

Yes, as long as it’s a genuine correction made at least two hours before departure, through the airline or your booking agent.

How big a correction can I make to my surname?

Virgin Atlantic’s own policy allows up to three characters, to match a passport. A bigger discrepancy needs extra sign-off, so contact the airline directly rather than relying on a small online edit.

What if I booked a Virgin Atlantic package holiday?

A package holiday, for example through Virgin Holidays, carries a separate legal right to transfer the whole booking to someone else under the Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements Regulations 2018. Your provider can charge an administration fee, but only to cover its actual cost.

What happens if my details don’t match my passport at the airport?

Staff check your ticket against your passport or photo ID before boarding. A genuine mismatch can lead to boarding being refused at the airline’s discretion, so fix a known mistake well before departure day rather than at the gate.

How does this compare to easyJet, Ryanair or TUI?

They all charge a fee to change who’s flying, from around £25 with TUI to £115 or more with Ryanair. It’s the outlier here too, like British Airways: it charges nothing, because it won’t do this on a flight-only ticket at all.
