Can You Cancel a British Airways Flight? Refunds by Fare Type

British Airways Boeing 787 Dreamliner on the runway, illustrating can you cancel a British Airways flight for a refund

Published 2 August 2026 | Updated 21 October 2026 by Kate Acaster

Can you cancel a British Airways flight for a full refund? Yes, within 24 hours of booking direct with BA, as long as the flight doesn’t leave inside that window. After that it’s still possible, but the fee depends on your fare and BA only shows it once you start the process. To start, go to British Airways Manage My Booking.

The 24-hour rule: can you cancel a British Airways flight for free?

British Airways gives you 24 hours after booking directly to cancel and get a full refund, as long as your flight doesn’t depart within that same 24-hour window. This applies to flight-only bookings paid for in full at the time of booking. It doesn’t cover a British Airways Holidays package, a separate business with its own cancellation terms covered in our British Airways Holidays guide, or bookings made through a travel agent, which follow their own terms. If you booked on ba.com, cancel it yourself in Manage My Booking; phone bookings need a call to BA directly.

British Airways cancellation policy by fare type

British Airways doesn’t publish a single cancellation fee table for flight-only bookings. Instead, the fee is calculated against your specific fare and shown to you as part of the cancellation process itself, so check Manage My Booking rather than trust a fixed number quoted elsewhere. What is confirmed is how the fare types differ in what they include.

Economy Basic is British Airways’ cheapest fare and the one to be most careful with. It’s hand baggage only, so a checked bag or a chosen seat costs extra, and it carries the least flexibility if your plans change. Our BA baggage allowance guide lists what a bag costs. If there’s any real chance your plans could shift, it’s worth checking what a higher fare actually buys you before booking the cheapest option, since British Airways prices the two very differently.

"The 24-hour window is the one number you can count on with BA. Check your booking the moment the confirmation lands: a wrong date caught that day costs nothing to cancel, while the same mistake a week later is priced against your fare. On Economy Basic, the least flexible fare, get the dates right before you think about a bag or a seat."

How to cancel your British Airways booking

Most cancellations are quicker to do online than at the airport.

If you booked directly with British Airways, cancelling follows the same basic process regardless of fare.

  1. Open Manage My Booking with your booking reference and surname.
  2. If it’s within 24 hours of booking and your flight doesn’t depart within that 24 hours, cancel there for a full refund.
  3. Outside that window, start the cancellation to see the exact fee for your fare before you confirm it.
  4. Confirm the cancellation and keep the confirmation email as proof.
  5. If you booked through a travel agent or another website, contact them directly. British Airways can only process refunds on bookings it sold itself.

Changing your flight instead of cancelling

If your fare allows it, British Airways can recalculate a new fare for a date or route change instead of cancelling outright. You’ll pay the difference if the new fare costs more, or get a refund if it costs less. Whether a change is free, charged, or not allowed depends entirely on your original fare’s own rules, the same way cancellation does. That’s a fare change, not a name correction: if the mistake is the passenger’s name rather than the date, see our guide to the British Airways name change fee instead.

If you don’t turn up

Missing a flight without cancelling or changing it counts as a no-show. Every remaining leg on that booking, including the return, is automatically cancelled.

If British Airways cancels instead

Different protections apply if British Airways is the one cancelling or significantly delaying your flight, under UK261, enforced by the Civil Aviation Authority. Full detail is in our guide to flying with British Airways.

Frequently asked questions

Can you cancel a British Airways flight for free?

Yes, if you cancel within 24 hours of booking directly with BA and your flight doesn’t depart within that same 24 hours. You’ll get a full refund. Outside that window, your fare’s own rules apply instead.

Does British Airways charge a cancellation fee?

It depends on your fare. British Airways doesn’t publish one fixed fee; the exact charge is calculated and shown to you the moment you start a cancellation in Manage My Booking.

What is British Airways’ Economy Basic fare?

Economy Basic is British Airways’ cheapest fare and includes hand baggage only, with no checked bag. You can add a checked bag or seat selection for a fee, but the fare itself carries the least flexibility if your plans change.

What happens if I miss my British Airways flight without cancelling?

You’re treated as a no-show, and every remaining flight on that booking is automatically cancelled, even the return leg. Always cancel or change in advance if you know you won’t travel.

Can I change my British Airways flight instead of cancelling it?

Often, yes. If your fare allows it, British Airways recalculates the new fare and you pay or are refunded the difference. Whether a change is free or charged depends entirely on the fare you originally booked.

Can I get a refund if I booked through a travel agent?

No, not directly from British Airways. You’ll need to go back to the travel agent or online travel site you booked with, since they hold the booking and any refund has to go through them.
