Many of us get 28 days of annual leave a year, including bank holidays. How much value you get from those 28 days depends almost entirely on when you take them.
The UK has 8 bank holidays in England and Wales in both 2026 and 2027. Every one of them can be stretched into a longer break with a bit of planning. In the best windows, a single day of annual leave gives you a four-day weekend. Time it exactly right and you get nine days off for just two days of annual leave.
This guide gives you every bank holiday date, every bridge window, and the Christmas run-down for both years. All dates in this guide have been verified programmatically against UK government statutory holiday rules.
Your statutory leave entitlement
Under the Working Time Regulations 1998, UK full-time workers are entitled to a minimum of 5.6 weeks’ holiday each year. For a standard five-day week, that works out to 28 days. Most employers include the 8 bank holidays in that total, leaving you 20 days to book yourself.
Part-time workers get the same entitlement in proportion to their contracted hours.
This guide covers England and Wales bank holidays only. Scotland observes different bank holidays, and Northern Ireland has additional days specific to Northern Ireland. Check GOV.UK for the full list for your nation.
What is a bridge day?
A bridge day is a day of annual leave taken to connect a bank holiday with a weekend, giving you an unbroken run of days off.
The most common example: if a bank holiday falls on a Monday, you take the preceding Friday off. You get four consecutive days away, but you have only used one day of annual leave. Some windows are far more generous than that.
Easter 2026 runs from Good Friday on 3 April to Easter Monday on 6 April. That is four consecutive days off without using any annual leave at all. Take just two days either side, Thursday 2 April and Tuesday 7 April, and you get nine straight days off for two days of annual leave.

A four-day Easter break is more useful than it looks. You could spend it at home, or you could be on a beach in Portugal, Tenerife, or the Canary Islands. Shoulder-season prices apply in early April, schools are still in term time, and flights from UK airports are still relatively cheap. It is the best-value break in the entire calendar year for many families.
The same logic applies to the May bank holidays. A long weekend in Barcelona, a few days in Prague, or a city break in Berlin are all doable on a modest budget when you are flying in late April or early May rather than peak summer.

Bridge days work best when you have somewhere to go. European city breaks are ideal for short windows, because a four-day weekend gives you enough time to fly out on the Friday, explore for two full days, and fly back on the Monday without feeling rushed.
Lisbon, Madrid, and Porto all have direct flights from regional UK airports at competitive prices. Book early, compare departure airports, and you could be sitting at a terrace cafe with a decent coffee and a view of the old town for less than you might expect. Our budget travel guide has more on keeping costs down.
The Christmas window in detail
Christmas and New Year is the window most people try to stretch, and both 2026 and 2027 give you solid options.
Christmas 2026: Christmas Day is a Friday, Boxing Day’s substitute is Monday 28 December, and New Year’s Day 2027 is a Friday. Take the three working days in between (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) and you get an eight-day run from Friday 25 December to Friday 1 January 2027 using just three days of annual leave.
Christmas 2027: Both Christmas Day (Saturday 25 December) and Boxing Day (Sunday 26 December) fall at the weekend. The substitute bank holidays are Monday 27 December and Tuesday 28 December. Take Wednesday 29, Thursday 30 and Friday 31 December, and you run straight through to Monday 3 January 2028 (the New Year’s Day substitute) for another eight-day break on three days of annual leave.

Your rights when requesting annual leave
Your employer can refuse an annual leave request, but they must give you at least as much notice as the length of the leave you are requesting. If you want a week off, they must tell you no at least a week before the intended start date. They cannot simply ignore your request.
If your employer has already approved leave and then needs to cancel it, they must give you at least as much notice as the leave was for. Cancelling approved leave at short notice is a breach of the Working Time Regulations in most cases.
Many employers operate a first-come, first-served policy for popular dates, particularly the days around Christmas and New Year. Book as early as your employer allows. Some workplaces open the booking window at the start of the annual leave year in January. If your employer does not have a formal policy, ask.
Zero-hours and casual workers accrue holiday based on actual hours worked, at a rate of 12.07% of hours worked. This is calculated and paid when leave is taken.
Making the most of your bridge days
Bridge windows tend to fall outside peak season, which helps with costs. The Easter and May bank holidays come before school summer holidays, so flights and hotels are generally cheaper than they will be in July and August. Our guide to when flights are cheapest by time of year breaks this down in more detail.
For the fuller picture on managing costs on any trip, our Flight Tribe budget travel guide covers accommodation, transport, food and everything else.
Short on inspiration? A four-day Easter break is enough time for a long weekend in Berlin or Prague, both of which are served by cheap direct flights from UK airports. If you want something warmer, the May bank holidays work well for Cape Verde, where the weather is reliable and prices are reasonable outside summer.
