Cancún is one of the UK’s most popular long-haul beach destinations, and the Hotel Zone delivers what most people come for: a 25km strip of Caribbean beachfront with turquoise water, reliable sunshine, and several hundred resorts to choose from. Getting good value from a Cancún holiday doesn’t mean avoiding the resort experience. It means knowing when to book, which type of deal suits your trip, and a handful of practical decisions that can save £200–400 per couple on a typical two-week stay.
On top of your package or hotel cost, budget around £30–50 per person per day for spending money: day trips, meals out, drinks, transport and tips. The biggest cost variables are timing and booking approach, both covered below. Our money-saving guides cover more destinations if you’re comparing options.
When to go
When you travel has a bigger impact on total cost than almost any other single decision.
| Period | Weather | Crowds | Budget verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| December to April | Dry, 25–30°C, very little rain | Busy. US spring break (February and March) makes the Hotel Zone rowdy and very crowded. | Most expensive. Christmas and New Year carry premium prices. Avoid spring break unless that’s the atmosphere you want. |
| May and June | Warm, 28–30°C, occasional afternoon showers | Quiet. Spring break crowds have gone and resorts have dropped their rates. | Best value for most UK visitors. Packages and flights at their lowest, weather still excellent. |
| July | Hot, 31°C, more frequent rain | Moderate. UK school holiday prices apply. | Good value. Some afternoon downpours, but mornings are usually good beach weather. |
| August to November | Hurricane season: hot, humid, heavy rain possible | Low | Cheapest prices, but hurricane risk is real. Full travel insurance is not optional. |
Getting there from the UK
British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and TUI fly direct from London Heathrow and Gatwick to Cancún International. The flight takes around 10 hours 45 minutes. There are no direct services from regional UK airports: flying from Manchester, Edinburgh or Bristol means connecting via a European or US hub, which adds three to five hours each way. Check our flight deals page for current Cancún fares.
Package operators including TUI, Jet2 Holidays, Virgin Holidays and easyJet Holidays all cover Cancún with all-inclusive and room-only options. Many offer early booking discounts of £50–150 per person if you book three to six months ahead, plus ATOL protection. In peak season, packages often beat the price of booking flights and hotels separately because operators buy seats and rooms in bulk. In the shoulder season, independent bookings can be cheaper.

Many packages include a shared coach transfer from Cancún airport to your hotel. If yours doesn’t, the ADO bus to Downtown costs around M$176 (about £7.55), from where city buses connect to the Hotel Zone. Uber is more convenient for direct hotel-zone drops and costs around M$300–400 (£13–17). Avoid the taxi touts outside arrivals: either use Uber with the fare confirmed in the app, or agree the price before getting in.
All-inclusive, room-only, or Downtown?
The biggest strategic choice on a Cancún trip is the booking approach.
| Approach | When it makes sense | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| All-inclusive package | Families, couples who plan to spend most of their time at the resort, anyone booking months ahead to get early-bird discounts. Predictable total cost and ATOL protection matter on a long-haul trip. | If you’re doing day trips most days and eating out most evenings, you’ll pay for meals you don’t use. All-inclusive earns its price only if you actually plan to use what’s included. |
| Room-only or B&B, Hotel Zone | Those who want flexibility, plan to eat out regularly, or are booking shoulder season when hotel-only rates are their lowest. Good option for couples without young children who’ll spend a lot of time exploring. | Hotel Zone restaurants and beach clubs add up quickly. Budget £40–60 per person per day for food and drink before comparing against an all-inclusive total price. |
| Downtown hotel, city bus to beach | The tightest budgets. Downtown hotels cost 50–70% less than the Hotel Zone, and the R1 and R2 city buses reach Hotel Zone beaches every few minutes for around 50p each way. | Downtown is a working Mexican city, not a beach resort. It’s a genuine option for independent travellers, but it’s not the right choice if you want a pool-and-beach holiday. |
Where to stay

The Hotel Zone runs north to south for 25km. The northern end, near the party clubs and Playa Tortugas, is busy into the early hours and better suited to couples and groups. The southern end, approaching Playa Delfines, faces the open sea and tends to be calmer. If you’re travelling with young children, the southern and central sections are the better choice.
| Option | Examples | From per night | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mid-range all-inclusive, Hotel Zone | Riu Cancún, Grand Park Royal. See hotel deals for current offers. | From £80–120pp all-in | Pool, private beach section, buffet meals and house drinks. The standard for most UK package holidays to Cancún. |
| Premium all-inclusive, Hotel Zone | Hyatt Ziva Cancún, Dreams Vista Cancún, Moon Palace | From £180–250pp all-in | À la carte restaurants included, swim-up rooms, premium drinks, beach service. A meaningful step up for longer stays. |
| Room-only, Hotel Zone | Marriott Cancún Resort, NH Krystal Cancún | From £100–160 per room | Beach access and pool without the meal package. Best if you plan to eat out at least half the week. |
| Budget hotel, Downtown | Hotel Suites Nader, Adhara Hacienda Cancún | From £30–80 per room | Clean and good value, with city bus access to Hotel Zone beaches. Right choice for independent travellers on a tight budget. |
Getting around
| Transport | Approx cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| City bus, R1 and R2 routes | M$12 (~£0.52) | Runs the full Hotel Zone strip to Downtown, 24 hours a day. Cash only. The cheapest way to reach Playa Delfines from anywhere in the Hotel Zone. |
| Uber | M$200–350 (~£8.60–15) | Widely available. Fare shown upfront before you accept. Cheaper and more reliable than street taxis. |
| Taxi (no meter) | M$200–400 (~£8.60–17) | Always agree the fare before getting in. Hotel taxis tend toward the top of this range. |
| Ferry to Isla Mujeres, return | M$200 (~£8.60) | Departs from Puerto Juárez, reached by R2 bus from the Hotel Zone. 15-minute crossing. |
| ADO bus to Tulum, one way | M$196 (~£8.40) | Around two hours. Regular departures from Downtown. Combine with a cenote stop on the way back. |
Day trips worth doing
Most UK visitors combine the resort with at least one or two day trips. The Yucatán Peninsula has some of the best excursion options in the Caribbean, and they’re all significantly cheaper when booked independently rather than through your hotel tour desk, which typically charges two to three times the actual cost for the same experience.

The cenotes of the Yucatán are naturally formed sinkholes filled with cool, clear freshwater. Cenote Ik Kil, near Chichén Itzá, is the most visited and charges around M$150–250 (£6.45–10.75) entry. Cenote Azul and Cenote Cristal, closer to Playa del Carmen, are equally good and easily combined with a day out of the Hotel Zone.

Chichén Itzá is the most popular day trip from Cancún, around two hours by road. The entry fee at the gate is M$573 (about £24.60). Hotel tour packages charge two to three times that for the same visit. Book independently via ADO bus to Pisté, or fix a price with a local driver. Arriving before 9am beats both the midday heat and the coach parties.
- Chichén Itzá: entry M$573 (about £24.60). Book via ADO bus or a local driver, not through your hotel tour desk. One of the most impressive Mayan sites in Mexico.
- Cenotes: entry M$150–250 (£6.45–10.75). Cenote Ik Kil and Cenote Azul are the most accessible from Cancún. Cool, clear water and a swimming experience unlike anywhere in Europe.
- Isla Mujeres: M$200 return ferry (£8.60) from Puerto Juárez. A car-free island with calmer beaches than the Hotel Zone, good snorkelling and a genuine local town. Worth a full day.
- Tulum: ADO bus around M$196 (£8.40) one way, site entry M$90 (£3.85). Mayan ruins on a clifftop above the Caribbean. Combine with a nearby cenote for a full day out.
- Playa Delfines and the public beaches: free to access by R1 or R2 bus for 50p. The same Caribbean sea as the hotel beach clubs that charge £25–35 for a sunlounger.
- MUSA underwater museum: from M$600 (about £25.75) for a guided snorkel tour. Over 500 submerged sculptures off the Cancún coast. One of the most unusual things to do in the region.
Where to eat
If you’re on an all-inclusive package, breakfast and lunch are covered. The question is whether to eat dinner at the resort or venture out. Hotel Zone restaurants are aimed at tourists and priced accordingly. Downtown Cancún, 25 minutes on the R1 bus, has a genuinely good food scene that costs a fraction of the equivalent Hotel Zone meal.

For a two-week all-inclusive trip, stepping out for dinner three or four evenings and eating at Downtown restaurants rather than Hotel Zone equivalents can save £15–25 per person per dinner. That saving easily covers one of the day trips above. The R1 bus back from Downtown runs all night, so there’s no need for a late taxi.
| Budget tier | Restaurant | Approx per head | What to order |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget | Taquería Los Chachalacos, Av. Bonampak 75, Downtown | Under £6 | Al pastor tacos, oyster tacos. Consistently one of Cancún’s best-reviewed restaurants despite the prices. |
| Mid | La Palapita, multiple Cancún locations | £15–20 | Ceviches, seafood plates, gourmet burgers. Good atmosphere and popular with locals. Book ahead for weekend evenings. |
| Worth the spend | La Habichuela, Downtown, open since 1977 | £35–45 | Cocobichuela: lobster and shrimp in coconut curry sauce, served in a coconut shell. One of Cancún’s most famous restaurants. |
Money-saving tips
These decisions have the biggest impact on total cost.
- Book early for the best package price. UK operators including TUI, Jet2 and Virgin Holidays run early booking discounts of £50–150 per person for departures booked three to six months out. The same trip costs considerably more when booked last minute.
- Go in May or June if your dates are flexible. Prices drop sharply after US spring break ends in March. May and June give the best combination of low prices and reliable weather.
- Avoid spring break in February and March. The Hotel Zone becomes very crowded with American college students during this period and it’s not the atmosphere most UK families or couples are looking for. Peak-season prices apply throughout.
- Use the R1 and R2 buses to reach public beaches. Playa Delfines at the southern end of the Hotel Zone is free to access for 50p on the bus. Beach clubs on the same strip charge £25–35 for a sunlounger. On a two-week trip, the difference is substantial.
- Book day trips independently, not through your hotel. Resort and hotel tour desks typically charge two to three times the standard rate for Chichén Itzá, cenote visits and Tulum. An ADO bus or a fixed-fare local driver does the same trip for much less.
- Use a fee-free UK card at ATMs. Cards including Monzo, Starling and Wise convert at close to the interbank rate with no foreign transaction fees. Avoid paying in US dollars, which the Hotel Zone accepts but at poor exchange rates.
- Take the ADO bus from the airport if you’re not on a package. At around M$176 (£7.55), it’s a fraction of the £25–40 a hotel shuttle or taxi charges. Buy the ticket at the ADO desk in arrivals, not from a tout.
- If you’re on an AI package, plan to use what’s included. All-inclusive works best when you’re at the resort for most meals. If you’re doing day trips daily and eating out every evening, a room-only rate may well work out cheaper overall.

Frequently asked questions
Is an all-inclusive Cancún holiday good value?
It can be, if you use what’s included: meals, drinks, pool and beach access are all in the price. If you plan to spend most days on excursions and eat out most evenings, the all-inclusive element adds cost without adding value.
What is the cheapest time to visit Cancún?
May and June offer the best value: prices drop sharply once US spring break ends and the weather stays reliable through June. Hurricane season runs August to November, so travel insurance is essential if you visit during that window.
How long is the flight from the UK to Cancún?
Direct flights from London Heathrow and Gatwick take around 10 hours 45 minutes, with British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and TUI all flying the route. There are no direct services from regional UK airports.
Is the Hotel Zone worth staying in?
For most UK visitors, yes: the Hotel Zone is where the resorts and beaches are, and it’s exactly what Cancún is known for. Downtown is significantly cheaper, but it’s a working city rather than a beach resort, and better suited to independent travellers on a tight budget.
Do I need to tip at an all-inclusive resort?
Yes, even on AI holidays: tipping is expected in Mexico for bar staff, restaurant waiters and housekeeping, typically 10–15% for service. Budget around £3–5 extra per person per day to cover it.
What currency should I use in Cancún?
Mexican pesos give better value than US dollars, which the Hotel Zone also accepts. Withdraw pesos from an ATM using a fee-free UK card like Monzo, Starling or Wise, and avoid hotel exchange desks.
Do UK citizens need a visa for Mexico?
No: UK passport holders can visit Mexico for up to 180 days without a visa, though you’ll need to complete a free tourist card (FMM) before travel. Check the FCDO Mexico travel advice on gov.uk before you fly.
