How to Cancel an easyJet Flight

easyJet gives you 24 hours after booking to cancel your flight and get a cash refund. After that window closes, standard tickets are non-refundable if you cancel. But if easyJet cancels your flight, or delays it by five hours or more, you are entitled to a full cash refund regardless. This guide covers each scenario.

Can you cancel an easyJet flight?

Yes, within 24 hours of booking. If you cancel within that window, easyJet gives you a full cash refund minus a cancellation fee of around £49 if you do it online or around £55 if you cancel through the customer services team. The remainder is returned to your original payment method.

After 24 hours, the standard fare is non-refundable. If you cancel after that point, you lose the money paid. This applies to most easyJet tickets. There are limited exceptions for serious illness or bereavement, which easyJet reviews on a case-by-case basis.

How to cancel within 24 hours of booking

To cancel and claim your refund, follow these steps:

  1. Go to easyjet.com and click Manage Bookings
  2. Enter your booking reference and the lead passenger’s last name
  3. Select the flight you want to cancel
  4. Choose the cancellation option and follow the prompts
  5. Your refund, minus the cancellation fee, will be returned to your original payment method

Alternatively, you can contact the easyJet 24/7 virtual chat advisor via the easyJet Contact Us page, though cancelling online is cheaper (£49 vs £55 via customer services). Allow up to seven working days for the refund to appear, though some banks take longer.

When do you get a full cash refund?

Outside the 24-hour window, you are entitled to a full cash refund in these situations:

  • easyJet cancels your flight: you must choose the refund option rather than accepting a rebooking or voucher
  • Your flight is delayed by five hours or more: you can claim a full refund for the unused portion of your journey

If easyJet cancels your flight, the airline will usually offer you a rerouting or an alternative flight. You are not obliged to accept. Select the refund option when prompted in your Manage Bookings account. If you choose a voucher by mistake, contact easyJet customer services to convert it to a cash refund, which is your legal right.

Compensation if easyJet cancels your flight

A refund is separate from compensation. Under UK261 regulations, you may also be entitled to compensation if easyJet cancels your flight less than 14 days before departure and the reason is within the airline’s control (not weather or air traffic control restrictions).

The amounts are:

  • Under 1,500 km: £220 per person
  • Between 1,500 and 3,500 km: £350 per person
  • Over 3,500 km: £520 per person

This is per person, per flight. If easyJet offered you an alternative flight and you accepted it, the compensation amount can be reduced by 50 per cent, depending on your arrival time.

To claim, use the compensation form on the easyJet website. If easyJet rejects a valid claim, you can escalate to CEDR, the UK’s aviation arbitration service, at no cost to you.

What about easyJet travel insurance?

If you booked easyJet insurance at checkout and need to cancel for a covered reason such as illness, you make the claim through the insurance provider rather than easyJet directly. Your booking confirmation will state who the insurer is.

For comparison, we have a separate review of whether Ryanair travel insurance is worth buying, which covers some of the same questions about airline-sold insurance policies.

What if you just want to change your flight?

Changing is different from cancelling. easyJet allows flight changes through Manage Bookings, subject to a change fee plus any fare difference. If the new flight is cheaper, you do not get a refund of the difference.

easyJet’s Inclusive Plus fare (previously known as FLEXI) includes one free flight change. If you are unsure of your travel plans, it is worth comparing the Inclusive Plus price against the cost of a potential change fee before booking.
