Is Kefalonia Expensive? The Honest 2027 UK Guide

Is Kefalonia expensive: aerial view of Myrtos Beach with white cliffs, turquoise water and the Ionian coast beyond

Published 13 October 2026 | Updated 13 October 2026 by Kate Acaster

Is Kefalonia expensive? Less than its hotel prices suggest. A room at the top end can cost nearly four times one at the bottom, but flights and dinners are a fixed cost whichever hotel you pick. So a week at the top works out at about twice the cheapest. This guide shows where the money goes, with the entry rules and Greece’s hotel climate fee along the way. We’ve left live prices to the deals below, because any figure we printed would be out of date by the time you read it.

We checked the facts here in October 2026 against the sources named under each table.

How to keep Kefalonia costs down

Four things move the bill most. The table takes them in turn.

CheckWhat we found
Pick the hotel with the base in mind
In our searches the cheapest three-star, in Lixouri, cost less than a third of the dearest, in Skala. Those are single hotels, not area averages, but the gap is wide enough to make a base worth choosing carefully.
Know the fee by star rating
Greece’s climate resilience fee is charged per night between April and October. A four-star pays twice what a three-star does, and a five-star pays three times. Over a week it’s small beside the room price, but it’s easy to forget.
Compare hotels with apartments
Expedia showed several times as many villas as hotels for our dates, and the very cheapest results were apartments, not hotels. The cheapest was a studio with a single review, so read the reviews before you celebrate. Short-term rentals pay the fee too.
Add flights and dinners before you compare
We’ve assumed the same flights and dinners whatever you book. On that basis they outweighed the room at the cheap end and made up about a quarter of the spend at the top.
Here’s how we worked it out: live Expedia UK searches for two adults sharing, taxes and fees included, plus Ryanair’s published fares, Jet2’s meal benchmark and the climate fee rates reported by Greek City Times. The fee is paid at departure.

"Don’t judge Kefalonia by its cheapest room. The room is the big swing, but flights and dinners are a fixed cost whichever hotel you pick, so they flatten the gap. In our sums the dearest week cost about twice the cheapest, even though its room cost nearly four times as much. And the cheapest hotel has only 19 reviews, so check it before you book."

Getting to Kefalonia from the UK

Jet2 lists the most UK airports for Kefalonia. easyJet, TUI and Ryanair also publish routes, and fares swing with the season, so a late-June Monday and a quiet October Monday can be nearly four times apart on Ryanair’s Stansted fares.

AirlineUK departures
easyJet
Gatwick, Manchester, Bristol and Edinburgh are listed.
Jet2
Birmingham, Bristol, East Midlands, Glasgow, Leeds Bradford, London Gatwick, London Luton, London Stansted, Manchester and Newcastle. Published flight times run from 3 hours 30 minutes from Bristol and the three London airports to 4 hours 10 minutes from Glasgow.
TUI
Its Kefalonia flights page offers a choice of UK airports but lists none. Check the booking tool for yours.
Ryanair
Its page lists London Stansted only.
Every row from the airline’s own route page: easyJet, Jet2, TUI and Ryanair. Other airlines may also serve the island, and routes change, so check before you plan around one.

A cheap fare can stop being cheap once you add a hold bag. Check the airline’s bag fee before you book.

Boats and yachts moored along the quay at Fiskardo harbour.

Expedia’s popular-location filter lists Fiskardo Port, Skala Beach and Myrtos Beach. Searching on each is a quick way to see how prices shift from one corner of the island to another.

Distances look shorter on a map than they feel from a hire car, and we haven’t measured them.

Visa and entry rules for UK travellers

Greece is in the Schengen area. Every day you spend on Kefalonia counts against your 90-day allowance.

RequirementWhat it means
Visa
Visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
Schengen days
GOV.UK says visits to Schengen countries in the previous 180 days count towards your 90.
Passport age
Issued less than 10 years ago. Check GOV.UK for how the 10 years is counted.
Passport validity
Expires at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area.
EES biometric check
The EU’s Entry/Exit System began on 12 October 2025. GOV.UK says Greek authorities have indicated they won’t collect biometric data from UK travellers under it. That’s a stated position, so follow the officer’s instructions on the day.
Every line from GOV.UK’s Greece entry requirements page and GOV.UK’s Entry/Exit System guidance. That guidance says the EU’s ETIAS travel authorisation is expected from autumn 2026 with no date set, so look at GOV.UK again before you travel.

Getting around Kefalonia

We couldn’t find a published fare table or timetable we could check, so this is a list of what we left out rather than a price list.

Where to base yourself in Kefalonia

The table covers seven places that came up in our Expedia searches, grouped into five areas. Costs are described relative to each other, because the pounds change and the pattern doesn’t.

Both score above 9, with far more reviews than most hotels in our sample.
Lixouri
Palatino Hotel (3-star), the cheapest hotel in our three-star search.
Only 19 reviews, so treat the rating with caution.
Skala
Porto Skala Hotel Village (4-star) cost less than every three-star except Palatino. Makis Hotel Skala (3-star) was the dearest three-star we found.
Same town, very different bills.
Agia Efimia
Kefalonia Bay Palace by GHH (4-star), priced in the lower half of our search.
The only property we found here.
Xi, Svoronata and Lourdata
Apollonion Asterias Resort and Spa (5-star, Xi), Electra Kefalonia Hotel & Spa (5-star, Svoronata) and F Zeen (adults only, 5-star, Lourdata).
The cheapest five-star cost more than twice the cheapest three-star. F Zeen cost more than six times as much.
From live Expedia UK searches for two adults sharing, taxes and fees included, hotels filtered by star rating and sorted by price. Expedia’s Kefalonia search also returned hotels labelled 27 to 34 miles from Kefalonia, which we excluded. We haven’t checked distances between bases.

Hotels are only part of the island’s stock. Expedia’s property filter showed several times as many villas as hotels for our dates.

Top end
A 5-star with a restaurant, spa and poolside bar and a fully refundable rate, the highest-rated hotel in our sample with more than 25 reviews. Nearly four times the budget room, and not the dearest five-star in our search.
Compared on live Expedia UK searches, two adults sharing. We couldn’t confirm whether Expedia’s prices include Greece’s climate resilience fee. Flight Tribe earns a commission if you book through these links, at no cost to you.

Expedia’s all-inclusive filter returned 11 hotels for our dates, and none we could place on Kefalonia: the names or distance labels pointed to Zakynthos. So we have no all-inclusive tier here, and we didn’t check the board basis on any room, so treat them as room-only prices.

Flights come from Ryanair’s published fares from Stansted, counted for two people each way, and dinners from Jet2’s meal benchmark, seven nights running. So, is Kefalonia expensive?

So no, it’s not as dear as the room prices make it look. The room is the part that swings, from cheap to nearly four times dearer, but flights and dinners are a fixed cost whichever hotel you pick. Put it all together and the dearest week we built came to about twice the cheapest.

We haven’t priced a hire car, and that will move the total.

What we’d do: look at Palatino in Lixouri and Porto Skala Hotel Village in Skala first. They were the two cheapest star-rated hotels in our search, though each has fewer than 30 reviews. Then add flights and dinners yourself, and get a hire car quote before you commit.
