Jet2 checked baggage: what a hold bag costs in 2026

Rows of colourful suitcases of the kind Jet2 checked baggage rules cover

Turn up at the airport without a bag booked and you won’t pay less than £45 for it. Add the same bag online when you book and it costs a fraction of that. Jet2 checked baggage is never bundled into a standard fare, so what you pay comes down almost entirely to when you add it. That makes it worth pricing up alongside a sale fare rather than afterwards – see our Jet2 sale dates guide for the current windows. You can take up to three 22 kg bags each, infants aside, and a Jet2holidays package includes one free. For Jet2’s cabin bag rules, see our Jet2 hand luggage allowance guide.

Pre-booking hold luggage online is almost always cheaper than paying at the airport

How much does Jet2 checked baggage cost?

Prices depend on the route and how early you book. For shorter routes such as Alicante, Palma, or Malaga, one 22 kg bag starts from around £8 to £12 each way when added at the time of booking. Longer routes such as Tenerife, Corfu, or Crete typically cost £15 to £25 each way.

The rule is consistent: the earlier you add hold luggage, the less you pay.

  • Pre-booking online saves up to 50% compared with the airport walk-up rate.
  • Adding it at the airport instead costs a flat £45 per bag, regardless of destination.
  • You can also add baggage later through Manage My Booking on the Jet2 website or app, but prices rise as the departure date approaches. Adding at checkout is nearly always the cheapest option.
  • For a couple each taking one hold bag on a return trip, a total baggage budget of around £70 to £90 is a reasonable estimate depending on the route.

Hold luggage is the one thing people leave until they’re packing, and by then the price has moved. I’ve stood at bag drop and watched someone pay the walk-up rate for a bag they could have added for pocket change at checkout. Sort it on the booking screen, while the flight is still the thing you’re thinking about.

Does Jet2holidays include checked baggage?

Yes. Every Jet2holidays package includes one 22 kg hold bag per person as standard, at no extra cost. This applies to all passengers on the booking, including children. If you want a second bag, you can add it at the standard per-bag rate. For families and groups, this is worth including in your comparison between a package and booking flights and a hotel separately. A family of four avoids four hold-bag fees, which can add up to £70 or more. You can browse Jet2holidays packages on the Jet2 website, or browse UK holiday deals across a range of operators.

Weight limits and excess baggage

The standard Jet2 hold bag limit is 22 kg per bag, and you can add up to three bags per person.

  • The maximum weight for any single checked item is 32 kg.
  • If your bag is overweight at check-in, Jet2 charges £12 per kilogram for the first 4 kg over the 22 kg limit. Beyond 4 kg a flat £45 applies, covering up to 22 kg of excess. A bag weighing 25 kg costs an extra £36. A 27 kg bag costs the flat £45. Either charge lands on top of the bag fee you have already paid.
  • The most reliable precaution is to weigh your bag at home before you leave, and aim for 20 kg to give yourself a buffer.

How to add baggage to your Jet2 booking

The cheapest time to add hold luggage is during the booking process, before you complete checkout. Jet2 shows the hold-bag options as part of the booking flow, and the prices at checkout are the lowest available.

  • Already booked? Log in to Manage My Booking on the Jet2 website or app. You can add hold bags right up to departure, but prices rise as the date approaches. Online check-in itself opens 28 days before the flight and closes six hours before.
  • Turning up at the airport without a pre-booked bag costs £45 per item. You cannot add hold luggage at the gate.

Sports equipment and exceptional items

Jet2 accepts sports and specialist equipment as checked luggage when booked in advance:

  • Golf bags, skis, and snowboards: from £35 per flight when booked online, each with a 22 kg allowance.
  • Bicycles: a 32 kg allowance, pre-booked. Pedals must come off, handlebars turn in line with the frame, tyres deflate, and the bike travels boxed or padded.
  • Musical instruments: from £30 in the hold with a 22 kg allowance. Anything inside 56 x 45 x 25 cm and under 10 kg flies free as your hand luggage instead.

Two items per child or infant travel free in the hold: a collapsible pushchair, a car seat or booster, a baby back carrier, or a travel cot. No single item can weigh more than 32 kg. Sports equipment cannot be added at the airport. It must be arranged through the Jet2 website or app before travel.

Tips for keeping Jet2 baggage costs down

  • Add hold luggage at checkout, not later. The checkout price is the lowest point in the pricing window. Prices tend to increase the closer you get to the flight, so adding baggage as part of the initial booking saves money in nearly every case.
  • Pack to 20 kg and leave a buffer. Excess fees are £12 per kilogram and accumulate quickly. If you are travelling with a partner, sharing one well-packed 22 kg bag can cut baggage costs in half on shorter trips.
  • Consider whether you actually need a hold bag. Jet2 gives every passenger except infants a free 56 x 45 x 25 cm overhead bag plus a free under-seat bag at 40 x 30 x 20 cm, with a 10 kg allowance. That is a generous combined allowance for short breaks. See our Jet2 hand luggage guide for packing tips.
  • Check whether a Jet2holidays package reduces the overall cost. The included 22 kg hold bag per person often narrows the price gap between a package and flights-only, especially for families.
  • Comparing airlines? See our easyJet baggage guide, TUI baggage allowance, or search UK flight deals to compare fares across carriers.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to add a bag to Jet2?

Hold luggage starts from around £8 one way for shorter routes when pre-booked online at the time of booking. The airport walk-up rate is £45 per bag. Prices vary by route and departure date, so adding baggage early is almost always cheaper.

What is the weight limit for Jet2 checked baggage?

The standard hold bag limit is 22 kg per bag. You can take up to three bags per person. The maximum weight for any single item is 32 kg. Jet2 charges £12 per kilogram for the first 4 kg over the limit, then a flat £45, so weigh your bag at home before you leave.

Can I take two bags on Jet2?

Yes. You can add up to three 22 kg hold bags per person, paying the relevant fee for each one. Jet2holidays passengers receive one 22 kg bag free as part of the package, and can pay to add more.

Does Jet2holidays include checked baggage?

Yes. Every Jet2holidays package includes one 22 kg hold bag per person at no extra charge. This applies to all passengers on the booking, including children.

Can you take a handbag as well as hand luggage on Jet2?

Yes, and you don’t pay for either. Every Jet2 passenger except infants gets a 10 kg cabin bag for the overhead locker, up to 56 x 45 x 25 cm, plus a separate under-seat bag up to 40 x 30 x 20 cm. Any of those counts as that second bag. Get either bag wrong at the gate and it costs you: Jet2 charges £45 per item for a cabin bag that’s over 10 kg or over size, so check the small one as well as the big one.

Do infants get a Jet2 baggage allowance?

Not a bag of their own. In the cabin, an infant’s things count towards the accompanying adult’s 10 kg. In the hold, Jet2 adds 10kg to that adult’s 22 kg allowance free of charge. Separately, up to two items per child or infant travel free: a collapsible pushchair, a car seat or booster, a baby carrier or a travel cot, each up to 32 kg.

What happens if my Jet2 bag is overweight?

Jet2 charges £12 per kilogram for the first 4 kg over the 22 kg limit at check-in, then a flat £45 beyond that. A bag weighing 25 kg costs an extra £36. Weighing your bag at home before you travel is the simplest way to avoid the charge.

How do I add luggage to my Jet2 booking after booking?

Log in to Manage My Booking on the Jet2 website or app and add hold luggage before you travel. Online check-in opens 28 days before departure and closes six hours before. Prices are lower earlier in the booking window, and the airport walk-up fee is £45 per bag.

Is hold luggage included in the price of a Jet2 flight?

No, hold luggage isn’t included in a standard Jet2 flight fare. You pay for checked bags on top of your ticket price, and only Jet2holidays packages include a bag automatically.
