Ryanair airport check in: the £55 fee explained
The £55 fee applies only if you arrive at the airport without having checked in online. On flights departing Spain it is €30, and from Austria €40. Online check-in is free and takes about two minutes through the Ryanair app or website. The fee covers being checked in and issued a boarding pass at the desk, and it’s separate from hold luggage, which is booked and paid for on its own, from £10.49 per bag. If you’ve already checked in online but can’t show your boarding pass in the app, Ryanair issues one at the airport free of charge.

The airline says the extra 20 minutes is meant to give passengers checking a bag more time through security and passport control, especially in busy periods. Ryanair can refuse to board you and won’t rebook you or refund the fare. This isn’t a soft cutoff. In one widely reported case, a passenger who reached the desk two minutes after the deadline was denied boarding, and a court later ruled Ryanair had acted lawfully, with the missed flight the passenger’s own responsibility. How to avoid missing Ryanair’s check-in deadline
- Check in online as soon as the window opens, 24 hours before departure, or up to 60 days before if you’ve bought a seat, rather than leaving it for the airport.
- Save your boarding pass in the Ryanair app. Ryanair moved to fully digital boarding passes in November 2025, so there’s no paper copy to lose.
- If you’re checking a bag, use one of Ryanair’s self-service bag-drop kiosks, now at over 95% of its airports, rather than queuing for a desk.
- Build in a buffer beyond the 60-minute cutoff for security and passport queues, particularly at peak times and larger airports.
- Don’t assume a delay outside your control buys you any flexibility. Aim to reach the desk or gate well before the deadline regardless of the reason you’re running late.
