How strict is Jet2 with hand luggage? Enough that an oversized bag costs £45 at the gate, and enough that the check happens on every flight rather than the busy ones. Since 2024 every Jet2 departure gate has used a gauge frame and scales. The rules themselves haven’t changed: one bag, 10kg, maximum dimensions of 56x45x25cm (wheels and handles included). What has changed is how reliably those rules are applied. The short version: Jet2’s allowance is the most generous of the big three UK budget airlines, and the enforcement of it is the tightest.

What are Jet2’s exact hand luggage rules?
Every Jet2 passenger except infants gets one cabin bag, up to 10kg. The maximum size is 56x45x25cm, including wheels, handles, and any protruding parts. It must fit in the overhead locker. You can also bring a small personal item, such as a handbag or laptop bag, provided it fits under the seat in front. Jet2’s maximum for this second bag is 40x30x20cm. Gate staff check the second bag far less often than the main one.

Infants under two work differently in the cabin and in the hold. In the cabin, an infant’s things count as part of the accompanying adult’s 10kg. In the hold, Jet2 adds 10kg to that adult’s 22kg allowance, free. On top of both, up to two items per child or infant travel free: a collapsible pushchair, a car seat or booster, a baby carrier or a travel cot, each up to 32kg.
A common mistake is packing a bag that meets the size limit but then adding items on top: a coat over the handle, a carrier bag in the crook of your arm. Jet2 gate staff may ask you to put everything inside your cabin bag before they’ll let you through. If you can’t fit it all in, the extras will be charged as an additional item.
Liquids follow standard UK aviation rules: containers of no more than 100ml each, all fitting in a single clear resealable bag of no more than one litre. Jet2 cabin bag size: what 56x45x25cm means in practice
The 56x45x25cm limit has to include everything: wheels, handles, external pockets and anything strapped to the outside. Jet2 measures the bag as it travels, not as the manufacturer describes it. That distinction matters, because wheels and a retractable handle routinely add 3 to 5cm to a case sold as “cabin approved”.
- A case sold as 56x45x25cm is usually measured shell-only. Yours gets measured with the wheels and the handle on.
At that size, most standard rolling cabin cases sold on the UK high street will pass. The 10kg weight limit is the more generous half of the allowance. The case itself only accounts for a small part of that, so a week of summer clothes usually sits comfortably under it. Winter breaks and ski trips are where it bites, since boots and a coat push the weight up fast. If you’re packing for the cold, weigh your own case on the bathroom scales first.
The free overhead bag is the real difference between Jet2 and the other two big UK budget carriers. On Ryanair and easyJet the cheapest fare buys you an under-seat bag and nothing more. On Jet2 the 10kg locker bag comes with the ticket.
What counts as a Jet2 personal item?
The second bag has to be no more than 40x30x20cm and has to fit under the seat in front of you. Jet2 publishes no weight limit for it, but it still has to physically fit, so packing it rigid defeats the point. Things that qualify:
- A handbag or tote
- A laptop bag or slim shoulder bag
- A small rucksack or daypack
- A bag of airport purchases
- A changing bag, if you are travelling with an infant
At 40x30x20cm the second bag is big enough to be worth using properly. It will take a laptop, a charger, documents, a change of clothes and everything you want during the flight. Moving heavy items into it can bring your main bag under 10kg. The limit is that the under-seat bag still has to look like one. If it won’t close, or it’s visibly bulging, staff will ask you to put the contents back in your cabin bag and you’ll be weighed on that.

The bag that gets stopped is rarely the one anyone worried about. It’s the case that fitted at home, measured shell-only, and grew four centimetres the moment the handle went up. Measure the object that goes in the frame, not the one on the box.

How strict is Jet2 with hand luggage at the gate?
Stricter than it was before 2024. Jet2 now uses sizing gauge frames at departure gates on all its routes. Staff place bags in the frame before boarding. If the bag doesn’t fit, or the scales show over 10kg, you pay the excess fee before you board. The check applies on every flight, at every airport, and staff gauge every bag rather than the ones that look borderline.

What is the excess bag fee?
If your bag is flagged at the gate, the charge is £45 per item, or €55 if you’re departing a eurozone airport. You pay before boarding. It covers the hold for that flight only, and it is not negotiable once you are standing at the gate.

The passengers who get caught most often are those travelling with soft bags that look smaller than they are. A 10kg soft holdall will compress in the gauge frame in a way a rigid suitcase won’t. It’s usually the weight, not the size, that triggers the fee, and the scales at the gate are accurate.
The Guaranteed Cabin Luggage add-on
Jet2 sells a Guaranteed Cabin Luggage add-on. It buys one thing: your 10kg bag stays in the cabin even when the lockers fill up. It doesn’t buy you extra size or extra weight, so if the bag breaks 56x45x25cm or tips the scales over 10kg you’ll still pay the £45. The price varies by route and shows in Manage My Booking on jet2.com, not at the airport.

Does the hand luggage allowance change on a Jet2holidays package?
No. Every Jet2.com fare carries the same free 10kg cabin bag (56x45x25cm) and free personal item (40x30x20cm), on a flight-only booking and on a full Jet2holidays package alike. Where a package earns its price is the hold bag: Jet2holidays includes one 22kg checked bag per person at no extra cost, while a flight-only booking pays for hold baggage separately. The gate gauge frame and scales don’t know or care which type of booking you made, so a package gives you no extra leeway with your cabin bag.

How to avoid problems at the gate
- Measure the bag with the handle up and the wheels on, and measure it yourself. The number on the box is the shell.
- Weigh your bag at home before you leave. Jet2’s gate scales are calibrated and accurate. If you’re already close to 10kg before adding your liquids bag, travel documents, and anything pushed in at the last minute, you’ll likely be over when you arrive at the gate.
- Wear your heaviest items rather than packing them. A coat you’re actually wearing and boots on your feet don’t get weighed. Stuffing the pockets at the gate and carrying the coat over your arm is a different thing, and staff will ask you to put it all back in the bag.
- Keep your personal item clearly within the under-seat dimensions. If a laptop bag won’t close, or a tote is visibly overstuffed, staff may ask you to put the lot in your main bag before you board.
- Remember that anything you buy airside counts as your personal item. A duty-free bag is not a third allowance, and gate staff treat it as one of your two.
- Book any extra luggage when you book the flight, or later through Manage My Booking. Jet2’s advance price is well under the £45 you’ll pay for an oversized bag at the gate, and you’ll see it before you pay.
