Is British Airways travel insurance worth it? Only if you have nothing else in place. It’s a legitimate policy, sold through XCover, that refunds up to 100% of your BA flight cost if illness or injury forces you to cancel. But it won’t cover anything beyond that single booking, and BA doesn’t sell an annual version.
What British Airways travel insurance covers
British Airways moved to XCover, the platform run by Cover Genius, in March 2025, replacing its previous insurer Europ Assistance. It now offers two options at checkout. The fuller option adds emergency medical assistance and baggage cover on top of the cancellation refund. The cheaper option covers the cancellation refund alone, with nothing extra.

- Up to 100% of your British Airways flight cost refunded if you, a companion, or a close family member is sick or injured and can’t fly
- Emergency medical assistance while you’re away, on the fuller option only
- Baggage protection, on the fuller option only
- Cover is added during the BA booking process, or afterwards through your BA account

If your holiday also includes a hotel, a transfer, or a package booked separately, BA’s add-on has nothing to say about any of it. It only protects the flight you bought it against. That gap matters because the fuller of the two BA options adds medical assistance and baggage cover, but even that stops at your BA flight, not the rest of the trip. A standalone policy, bought once before you go, typically covers the whole trip: flights, accommodation, and anything else you’ve booked, rather than just the one flight.
Who underwrites it, and what changed in 2025
XCover Protection is administered by Cover Genius, a regulated insurance intermediary. BA’s own page doesn’t name the underwriting insurer behind this specific policy, so check the wording shown at checkout rather than assuming it matches another airline’s. BA did move away from Europ Assistance in March 2025, though, the same insurer Ryanair’s policy still uses today.
“British Airways switching away from Europ Assistance in 2025 tells you something: even the airline’s own insurer relationship isn’t fixed, so don’t assume last year’s advice about it still applies. I’ve watched too many readers buy the box-tick cover at checkout because it’s easy, then discover it only protects the flight they’re insuring, not the whole trip. If you’re booking anything beyond the flight itself, a proper annual policy will do more for less.”

What British Airways travel insurance doesn’t cover
There’s no annual or multi-trip version. Every policy is tied to the one BA booking you buy it against, so it’s no use if you fly often. Pre-existing medical conditions aren’t covered automatically either. Declare one when you buy, or cover for it won’t be guaranteed.
How much does British Airways travel insurance cost?
There’s no fixed published price. BA quotes the cost during checkout, based on your trip cost, destination, and dates. That makes it hard to shop the figure in advance, which is itself a reason to get a standalone quote first.
British Airways Holidays is a different business
This page covers the airline’s own optional add-on only. If you’ve booked a package through its Holidays arm, that’s a separately run, ATOL-licensed business with its own terms, not covered here. See our British Airways Holidays guide for details on the package itself.
Is British Airways travel insurance worth it?
For a single, one-off BA flight, with nothing else booked, it’s a reasonable option to add at checkout rather than fly with nothing. For most other travellers, a standalone policy is the better call. It covers the whole trip, it’s usually cheaper if you go away more than once a year, and you can compare the price before you commit.

MoneyHelper’s guidance on choosing cover makes the same point. A policy bought at the point of booking is rarely compared against anything else. Comparison sites routinely turn up broader annual cover for a similar price to a single BA add-on, often with higher medical limits and no restriction to one specific flight. Fly more than once or twice a year, and that gap in value only grows, since BA’s policy resets, and gets paid for, every single time you book.

Frequently asked questions
What does British Airways travel insurance cover?
The fuller of BA’s two options refunds up to 100% of your BA flight cost if you have to cancel through illness or injury, plus emergency medical assistance and baggage cover. The cheaper option, Trip Cancellation Protection, covers the cancellation refund only.
Who provides British Airways’s travel insurance?
It’s sold through XCover, administered by Cover Genius. BA switched to this arrangement on 3 March 2025, replacing its previous insurer, Europ Assistance.
Does British Airways offer annual travel insurance?
No. Every policy is tied to the single BA booking you buy it against. If you fly more than once or twice a year, a standalone annual policy will almost always work out cheaper.
How much does British Airways travel insurance cost?
There’s no fixed price. BA quotes a cost during checkout based on your trip cost, destination, and travel dates.
Does British Airways travel insurance cover pre-existing medical conditions?
Not automatically. You need to declare any pre-existing condition when you buy, and cover for it isn’t guaranteed. Check the policy wording shown at checkout before you rely on it.
What’s the difference between BA’s two travel insurance options?
The fuller option adds emergency medical assistance and baggage cover on top of the cancellation refund. Trip Cancellation Protection covers the cancellation refund only, with nothing else included.
Is British Airways Holidays’ insurance the same product?
No. British Airways Holidays is a separately run, ATOL-licensed business with its own package terms. This page covers the airline’s own flight add-on only.
