Is Tromso Expensive? A 2027 UK Guide to the Cost

Is Tromso expensive: green northern lights over a snowy fjord shore near Tromso in Norway

Published 14 October 2026 | Updated 14 October 2026 by Kate Acaster

Is Tromso expensive? Norway is, but the room rate swings most with the week you go. At the same hotel, our February week cost about 2.7 times as much as our late September week, and moving up a hotel tier added less. This guide covers hotel costs, the entry rules and when the lights show.

How to compare Tromso costs

Four things to check before you compare prices. The table takes them in turn.

CheckWhat we found
Pick the week first
We priced one hotel, Comfort Hotel Xpress, for the same seven-night stay in four different weeks. February cost about 2.7 times late September, and March about 2.1 times. Mid June, in the midnight sun, cost about the same as September.
Then compare tiers
In our February search the dearest three-star in the city cost about twice the cheapest, so choosing between three-stars matters too. The four-star and 4.5-class picks below came out at about 1.7 and 1.8 times the budget pick.
Fewer hotels listed in February
Expedia’s three-star search listed 14 properties for the February week and 24 for the March week. We didn’t count September or June.
Add flights and food before you compare
Every figure here is Expedia’s room rate, and we didn’t check what’s included. We haven’t priced flights, meals or tours.
Here’s how we worked it out: live Expedia UK searches for two adults sharing one room for seven nights, taxes and fees included, read on 14 October 2026. The weeks were 20 to 27 September, 14 to 21 June, 15 to 22 March and 8 to 15 February, all 2027. A November week returned too few city hotels to use. We left out three properties we judged to be outside the city: Steam Pier Adventure Hotel, Lyngseidet Gjestegård and Malangen Resort. Expedia’s distance labels were unreliable, so we went by name and location. The ratios are rounded.

"What surprised me was March. The lights are still possible until early April, yet that week cost about twice late September at the same hotel. And mid June, in the midnight sun, cost about the same as September. If you’ve got any flexibility, price September first."

Best time to visit Tromso

Choose between the northern lights and the midnight sun, then check what the room costs. The lights need darkness and a clear sky, and nobody can promise a clear sky.

SeasonWhat the sources sayWhat our hotel search showed
Late August to early April
Visit Tromso says the northern lights may be visible, but clear skies and darkness are essential. The Fjellheisen cable car says September to April, best from 6pm to 2am.
Cheapest in late September, dearest in February, and March about twice September.
20 May to 22 July
The cable car gives this as the midnight sun period.
Mid June cost about the same as September.
Season dates from Visit Tromso and fjellheisen.no. The hotel column is from our own Expedia searches for the weeks in the table above.

So, is Tromso expensive?

Yes. Norway’s overall price level was 24% above the EU average in 2024, and food 31% above. For the room alone, the week you pick moved our price more than the hotel did: about 2.7 times as much in February as in late September at the same hotel. Choosing between three-stars in one week doubled it too, so both matter.

We haven’t priced flights, meals or tours, and they will change the total.

Price late September and March first, then compare them with February. If you’re weighing Iceland for the lights instead, see our Iceland money-saving guide. Then check the latest UK travel deals for fares.
