La Gomera budget travel: the 2026 UK guide

la gomera budget travel — Vallehermoso mountains and coast, La Gomera, Canary Islands

La Gomera budget travel is more affordable than the main Canary Islands, partly because getting there takes an extra step. There are no direct flights from the UK. You fly to Tenerife South, then take a 50-minute ferry across. That crossing keeps most package holidaymakers away and keeps prices lower than on the neighbouring islands. Budget travellers can expect to spend around €80-100 per day including accommodation, food, and activities. A 7-night trip including flights to Tenerife, ferry crossings, and accommodation typically costs £450-600 per person.

UK nationals don’t need a visa. La Gomera is part of Spain and the EU, and stays of up to 90 days require no advance paperwork. Your passport only needs to be valid for your trip. If you’re comparing the Canaries, our Canary Islands guide covers all seven islands, and our Tenerife budget guide is useful if you plan to spend a night or two there on the way.

When is the cheapest time to visit La Gomera?

Spring and autumn are the sweet spots. April and May bring warm, clear weather, green valleys after the winter rains, and none of the summer crowds. The walking is at its best and prices for both flights to Tenerife and accommodation on the island are well below peak. September and October offer similar conditions with the warmest sea water of the year.

July and August are peak season: flights to Tenerife are at their most expensive, the ferry is busier, and it’s too hot for comfortable hiking in Garajonay. January and February are mild by UK standards, typically 18-20°C, and attract a steady winter sun market that keeps prices from dropping as low as you might expect.

Cheap flights to La Gomera from the UK

There are no direct flights from the UK to La Gomera. You’ll fly to Tenerife South (TFS), which has year-round routes from Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2, and TUI operating from airports including Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Gatwick, Stansted, Leeds Bradford, Edinburgh, and Glasgow. Return flights to Tenerife start from around £50 in the shoulder season and average £120-180 for most of the year.

From Tenerife, Fred Olsen Express and Naviera Armas run ferries from Los Cristianos to San Sebastián de la Gomera. The crossing takes around 50 minutes and runs up to eight times daily. Return tickets for UK visitors cost from around €87. Book through Fred Olsen’s website or Naviera Armas. If you want to travel light and fast, Jet2 tends to have the most competitive all-in pricing for the Tenerife leg when bags are included.

La Gomera airport (GMZ) does exist and handles inter-island flights, but no scheduled routes currently operate from the UK mainland to GMZ. The ferry is the standard entry route for British visitors.

Where to stay in La Gomera on a budget

Valle Gran Rey on the west coast is the main base for visitors. It’s a cluster of small villages around a wide valley that drops to the sea, with black sand beaches, local restaurants, and the most concentrated choice of accommodation on the island. It’s also the best base for Garajonay day trips.

San Sebastián de la Gomera, the capital, is quieter and more functional. It’s where the ferry arrives and where you’ll find the Parador hotel and a handful of bars near the harbour. Worth a few hours on arrival, but most visitors move on to Valle Gran Rey the same day.

Playa de Santiago, in the south, is smaller and sunnier. It catches more direct sun than the rest of the island and has a working fishing port feel. Slightly cheaper than Valle Gran Rey for accommodation.

Eating and drinking cheaply in La Gomera

The menu del día is the most reliable way to eat well for less. Most local restaurants offer a three-course set lunch including bread and a drink for €10-15 between around 1pm and 4pm. Restaurants that cater to walking groups tend to offer better value than those on the seafront in Valle Gran Rey.

Two Canarian specialities worth knowing: almogrote is a spiced cheese paste, usually served free with bread as a starter, and mojo verde (a green herb sauce made with coriander and garlic) comes with almost everything. Local wine from the island is drinkable and inexpensive. A beer in a bar costs €2-3, a coffee around €1.50.

Restaurante Casa Efigenia, in the village of La Montaña near Garajonay, is the most recommended traditional restaurant on the island. It’s family-run, cash only, and serves a fixed vegetarian lunch using produce from the surrounding area. Budget around €15-20 per person. Bar Terraza La Chalana in Playa de Santiago is a long-established seafood and tapas place right on the beach. Bar Tarajal, nearby on the same seafront, is a simpler option serving fresh fish and local wine by the glass.

La Gomera’s mountain villages are linked by walking trails , most are within reach on foot, and you’ll find local bars serving coffee and local wine for far less than the resort towns.

Free and cheap things to do in La Gomera

Garajonay National Park is the centrepiece of any trip and it’s free to enter. The park covers about 10% of the island and protects one of the world’s largest remaining areas of ancient laurisilva, or laurel forest. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. Multiple marked trails run through it, ranging from easy valley walks to full-day ridge routes. The park service runs free guided walks every Friday throughout the year.

Valle Gran Rey itself is worth a full day without spending much. Walk up from the beach through the terraced hillside villages of La Calera and El Guro, stop at a bar, then walk back down. The views across the valley and out to sea are some of the best on the island. A return trip to the Mirador del Santo, one of the most photographed viewpoints, costs nothing beyond petrol.

Silbo Gomero, the island’s ancient whistling language, is a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage. Local schools still teach it and occasional demonstrations take place in San Sebastián. Check with the tourist office on arrival. It’s one of those things you need to hear once.

Getting around La Gomera cheaply

A hire car is strongly recommended. The island has a public bus network run by Guaguas Gomeras, but routes between San Sebastián and Valle Gran Rey run infrequently and the journey takes around 1.5 hours via the mountain roads. Most trailheads, viewpoints, and smaller villages aren’t reachable by bus at all.

Car hire on the island starts from around £20-25 per day including basic insurance. Roads are mountain roads: narrow, steep, and winding. If you’ve driven in hilly terrain before you’ll be fine, but it’s worth knowing before you book an automatic versus manual. Petrol prices are similar to the UK. Parking in Valle Gran Rey can be tight in summer.

If you’re coming for a day trip from Tenerife, a taxi from San Sebastián harbour to Valle Gran Rey costs around €25-30 each way. That’s viable for a single day but adds up quickly for a longer stay.
