Is Rhodes expensive? It sits mid-table among the Greek islands: dearer than Crete or Kos, nowhere near Santorini or Mykonos. A realistic budget day runs €66-83, covering a room in the New Town, a gyros lunch, a bus fare and a swim. What catches UK visitors out isn't the tavernas. It's that the three headline sights now come to €50 a head, with no combined ticket left to soften it, and a room levy of up to €15 a night that Expedia's "taxes included" price doesn't cover.

Rhodes uses the euro, and UK passport holders need no visa for stays of up to 90 days, the same Schengen rule that covers Crete and Athens. As of August 2026, £1 buys roughly €1.17.

How to keep Rhodes costs down

Package tourism sets the pricing here. Anything sold to you at the hotel desk or on the Faliraki strip carries a mark-up. The public bus network, the state ticket office and the New Town backstreets don't, and the gap between the two is worth €20-30 a day.

Getting to Rhodes from the UK

Jet2 flies to Rhodes from fourteen UK airports and easyJet from eight, so most of the country reaches the island without changing planes. That competition is what keeps fares down.

Visa and entry requirements for UK travellers

Ten years and three months. That's the passport arithmetic, and it catches people out more often than the 90-day rule does: your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years on the day you arrive, and stay valid for at least three months after you leave. Travel itself is visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180.

Getting from Rhodes airport into town

The airport is on the wrong coast for most people, 14km out past Paradisi village, but the bus solves it. The west-coast line runs past the terminal into Rhodes Town every half hour or so from 05:15 until midnight, and Line 25 connects the airport directly with Faliraki.

Getting around Rhodes

Eighty kilometres end to end, and the bus network covers the side you will actually use. KTEL Rodou runs two stations in Rhodes Town, one for the east coast and one for the west, with fares fixed and printed. Nothing here needs a hire car unless you want the mountain villages or the far south.

This is the largest inhabited medieval town in Europe, and around 3,000 people still live inside the walls. The charges start at the doors: €20 for the Palace at the top of the Street of the Knights, €10 for the Archaeological Museum in the old Knights' hospital further down. Everything between them is street.

Where to base yourself in Rhodes

Four choices, and they price differently. Rhodes Town gives you the medieval quarter, the museums and both bus stations, and it works without a car; expect £70-90 a night in the New Town. Ixia and Ialysos are the resort strip nearest the airport, so transfers are short and half-board rates land around £140. Faliraki is the party end. Lindos is the prettiest and the dearest at £150-300, and its lanes are stepped and closed to cars, so a suitcase is a real problem.

What Rhodes’s main sights cost

Greece reformed its museum pricing in two stages. From April 2024 it withdrew most multi-site combination tickets, keeping them only where a site and its museum share a footprint, which Rhodes's do not. From April 2025 it flattened nine price bands into five and abolished the 50% winter discount. The practical effect is that the headline sites cost the same in February as in August, and there is no combined ticket left to buy.

State sites and museums admit under-18s of any nationality free. They also admit EU citizens under 25 free, and that concession stopped covering British visitors after Brexit, so a UK traveller aged 18 to 24 now pays the full €20. The over-65 half-price rate only applies from 1 October to 31 May, which rules out most UK summer trips. Free-admission days fall on 6 March, 18 April, 18 May, the last weekend of September and 28 October.

The Colossus is the thing you came to see and the thing you can't. It stood about 54 years before an earthquake brought it down around 226 BC, and nobody knows where it stood. The deer columns at Mandraki are a modern flourish.

Where to stay in Rhodes on a budget

There is more hotel stock here than on almost any Greek island, and August still runs at roughly double the May rate for the same property. Prices below were checked on Expedia on 14 August 2026 for the dates shown, taxes included. Add the climate resilience levy on top: €2 a night for apartments and 1 to 2-star hotels, rising to €15 for 5-star, charged per room per night from April to October and collected at the desk.

Where to eat and drink in Rhodes on a budget

Step one street back from the harbour front and the prices halve. Gyros in the Nea Agora galleries costs €2.50-3, and a bottle of local wine in a taverna runs €12-15, less than two cocktails on the strip. You're entitled to an itemised bill by law, which is the cure for a rounded-up handwritten total.

One more worth knowing about, though it has no website to link to: To Steno, a small meze house at 29 Agion Anargyron in the New Town, about ten minutes’ walk from the Old Town walls. Courgette flowers, Symi shrimp and village sausage, roughly €15 a head, no reservations, opens at 18:00 and fills quickly.

The local product to bring home

Melekouni is chewy and sticky, closer to a flapjack than nougat: sesame, honey, almonds, orange peel and spices, served at Rhodian weddings and christenings. Buy it in the Nea Agora for a few euros rather than at the airport. It holds Protected Geographical Indication status, and it carried across onto the UK protected food names register at the end of 2020, so the name is protected here too. The defined production area is the island itself, which means a bar bought anywhere else isn't the real thing.

Lindos and the Old Town

Two places take most of the money, and both earn it. Neither needs an excursion.

Do the arithmetic before booking a coach trip. The public bus and the Acropolis ticket come to €31 return. An organised excursion runs €25-50 and generally leaves you to buy the €20 ticket anyway, so the same day out costs €45-70 and runs to somebody else’s timetable. Buses leave for the town until 21:45 in high summer.

The Palace is younger than it looks

The Knights of St John held Rhodes from 1309 until the Ottomans took the island in 1522. Their palace survived until 1856, when a gunpowder explosion destroyed most of it. The Italian administration rebuilt it between 1937 and 1940 as a neo-Gothic reconstruction, meant as a summer residence for the Italian king and later for Mussolini, and shipped the mosaic floors in from Kos, the Medusa included. None of it was part of the medieval building. It still earns its €20.

Where the wine comes from

A bottle of local Athiri in a taverna runs €12-15, less than two cocktails on the strip and a good deal more interesting. Order the whites.

Why the wine tastes of somewhere

The island has its own PDO, and it's one of the few places in Greece where phylloxera never took hold at altitude. Ungrafted old vines still grow on the slopes of Mount Attavyros around Embonas. Whites must be at least 70% Athiri, reds and roses at least 70% Amorgiano. The island is also the main source of Greece's bottle-fermented sparkling wine, which began with CAIR, founded in 1928 as the Compagnia Agricola Industriale Rodi.

For somewhere quiet, drive inland to Eleousa, 34km south-west of Rhodes Town. The Italians built it in 1935 as a model village called Campochiaro and walked away in 1947. Three large buildings and a church still stand around the square, and unlike every other headline sight on the island there is no ticket booth. The circular Italian cistern nearby holds the gizani, a freshwater minnow found nowhere on earth but Rhodes.

So, is Rhodes expensive?

No, but it's no longer cheap, and the reason has changed. Eating out, rooms and buses all stayed reasonable. What moved is the state ticket pricing: €50 a head for the Palace, the Lindos Acropolis and the Archaeological Museum, with no combined ticket left, no winter discount, and a Brexit-shaped hole where the under-25 concession used to be for British visitors.

Greek law requires beach operators to leave public access open, and enforcement has teeth now. Complaints go through the government's MyCoast app, which logged more than 11,500 reports nationally in 2025, over 7,400 of them for unauthorised sunbeds. The Dodecanese ranked fourth in the country. Fines run from €2,000 to €60,000. If someone tells you a stretch of sand is theirs and you have to rent to sit on it, they're often wrong.

Budget €67-90 a day for the ordinary business of being there, then treat the sights as a separate one-off line. Go in late May or from mid-September and the same hotel costs about half what it does in August.

What about the 2023 fires?

They burned 17,773 hectares of the south-east interior around Laerma, Kiotari and Gennadi. Rhodes Town, Lindos, Faliraki, Ixia and Pefkos weren't affected and have run normally since. Inland, the burnt hillsides are still visibly burnt, and replanting by a local cooperative and more than a hundred hotels is under way. The Foreign Office carries no Rhodes-specific warning, only a general note that Greece has a high wildfire risk from April to October.
