How to keep Crete costs down

Crete has two airports taking UK flights, and the choice matters more here than on a small island. Heraklion (HER) is on the north coast in the centre-east and takes the bulk of the traffic. Visa and entry requirements for UK travellers
UK passport holders don’t need a visa to visit Crete, or anywhere else in Greece. Stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period are covered by the Schengen area’s standard visa-free allowance. Your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years, and it must stay valid for at least three months beyond the day you plan to leave the Schengen area.
EES and what it means at Greek airports
The EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) records fingerprints and a photo from non-EU passport holders on arrival, UK travellers included. Check the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office’s travel advice for Greece before you fly. Build in extra time at passport control on arrival, particularly on a Saturday changeover in peak season.
Getting from Heraklion airport into town
Heraklion Airport is about 5km east of the city, so the transfer into town is short and costs €1.30 on the bus. The expensive mistake is landing here when your hotel is in Chania, 140km west.

Getting around Crete
Crete’s public transport is unusually good for a Greek island, but only in one direction. The north-coast corridor linking Chania, Rethymno and Heraklion has buses every 30 to 60 minutes. Everything south of that road, which is where most of the gorges and the quieter beaches are, thins out fast.

The dirt road to Balos, and what it costs
There are two ways to reach Balos Lagoon, and both charge on arrival. Driving means a rough unsurfaced track from Kalyviani, then €1 a head to enter the site and about €3 to park. The boat from Kissamos, which also stops at the Venetian fort on Gramvousa, starts at around €25 a head. Most hire agreements exclude damage on unsurfaced roads, which is the strongest argument for taking the boat.
The Venetian and Ottoman street plan inside Chania’s walls was never built for cars, and most of it is pedestrianised now. If you hire a car for the beaches, budget for a paid car park outside the old town rather than assuming your hotel has a space.
Where to base yourself in Crete
Chania, at the western end, has the shortest drives to Samaria, Balos and Elafonissi. Heraklion is the plainest of the three main towns, but it puts Knossos and the Archaeological Museum within a bus ride and has the widest flight choice. Rethymno is between the two, with a Venetian old town and lower room rates than Chania. The purpose-built resort strips at Malia, Hersonissos and Platanias undercut all three on package prices, but you lose the walkable town.

The lagoon sits at the far north-western tip of the island, past Kissamos. The shallow water warms early in the season, which makes it one of the few Cretan beaches worth the drive in May.

Where to eat and drink in Crete on a budget
Bougatsa, a filo pastry filled with sweet custard or fresh mizithra cheese, is what most people eat for breakfast here, and it costs about €3 a piece. A fish taverna dinner runs €20-35 a head, seven to ten times the price of breakfast.

Away from the harbour fronts, most tavernas post a board with a fixed menu for two. Read the small print before you sit down: the headline figure is the price for the pair, not per head.
Knossos and the Samaria Gorge
Knossos costs €20 at the gate and Samaria €10. Day tours to either routinely cost several times that. It is the single easiest saving on a Crete trip.
Knossos: €20, and a morning visit in July and August
Full admission to the Palace of Knossos is €20, with a €10 reduced rate. City bus No. 2 runs there from Heraklion. The Ephorate of Antiquities also closes the site during extreme heat. It did so on 22 July 2026, between noon and 5pm. In July and August, treat a morning visit as the only reliable one.
Evans rebuilt parts of the palace in concrete in the early 20th century, which is why some walls look far newer than 3,500 years old. The originals he lifted, including the frescoes and the Linear B tablets, sit in the museum in Heraklion, so the two work better as a pair than as separate trips.
Samaria: €10, 16km, and shorter than its reputation
Samaria opens on 19 May in 2026 and closes at the end of October, weather permitting. Entry is €10. The walk is 13km inside the national park plus another 3km to the boat at Agia Roumeli, so 16km in total. Tour listings often quote 18km. Arrive after about 2pm and the wardens will turn you back partway in, so that everyone is out of the park before dark.
The park maintains drinking-water springs along the route, so you don’t need to carry a full day’s water. Wardens patrol the path in radio contact with each other. That is part of what the €10 pays for.

Base yourself in one town, use the north-coast buses, and hire a car for two days rather than seven. Do that and a Crete day lands at the bottom of the ranges below.

Best time to visit Crete on a budget
Crete’s shoulder season runs longer than most Greek islands’, because the south coast stays warm into November. The catch is that the Samaria Gorge is shut from November to mid-May.

So, is Crete expensive?
No, not against the Cyclades, and not against most of the western Mediterranean. Taverna prices stay close to mainland levels, and the bus network works along the north coast where most visitors stay.
Rethymno changed hands from Venice to the Ottoman Empire in 1646 and kept both layers. It is also the cheapest of the three walkable old towns to sleep in, and it is on the KTEL corridor between the two airports.
