Wizz Air Checked Baggage: What It Actually Costs in 2026

A Wizz Air Airbus A321neo taxiing at London Luton Airport: Wizz Air checked baggage has no single fixed price

Last updated: August 2026

Wizz Air checked baggage has no single fixed price. The Basic fare includes none at all, and on a real Luton to Budapest booking checked live for this guide, add-on prices ran from £24.70 for the smallest bag up to £47.07 for the largest, depending on weight and how far ahead you book.

How much does a Wizz Air hold bag cost

There’s no flat fee sheet on wizzair.com. Instead, the price is set dynamically for each flight, so the clearest way to answer “how much” is to book a real route and read the numbers back. We did that on 19 August 2026, London Luton to Budapest, one-way, Saturday 5 September 2026, on the Basic fare (base price £28.99).

The 10 kg option is the exception in the range: you can only buy one per passenger. The other three sizes can be combined, and Wizz Air’s own baggage policy allows up to six checked pieces on a single booking, with the first three payable online and the rest settled at the airport for a higher rate.

Which Wizz Air fares already include a hold bag

Four fare types are on sale, and only two carry a checked bag as standard. Basic and WIZZ Smart both cap you at cabin baggage. The other two step up to a 20 kg hold bag, then a 32 kg one, each with more extras attached.

“On the booking we checked, adding a 20 kg bag on its own cost over £20 less than stepping up to WIZZ Go for the same 20 kg allowance. The bundle earns its price if you want the seat pick and the extra cabin bag that come with it, and it’s an overspend if you don’t.”

Bundle or pay-as-you-go: which costs less

The same 20 kg allowance costs less bought on its own than folded into a bundle, unless you also want the seat pick.

On our checked booking, both figures below sit on top of the same £28.99 Basic base fare. The gap between them is wide enough to matter on a tight budget.

  • Basic fare plus a 20 kg bag added on its own: £28.99 + £36.34
  • WIZZ Go fare, which bundles in the same 20 kg bag: £28.99 + £56.92
  • Extra cost of the bundle over the standalone bag: £20.58, for seat selection and one extra cabin bag

Happy to sit wherever Wizz Air puts you? If you’re carrying one hold bag and one under-seat item, the standalone bag on Basic is the cheaper route.

How to keep the cost down

Adding your bag at booking, rather than later or at the airport, is where most of the saving sits.

A few habits keep the bill closer to the numbers above. We tested the first one directly: booking the same 20 kg bag on the same route just three days before departure, rather than seventeen, added £2.68 to the price.

  • Add your checked bag when you book, rather than leaving it until closer to the date.
  • Pick the weight tier you’ll actually use. Going up a size later costs more than choosing correctly at booking.
  • Weigh your case before you travel. Wizz Air’s own baggage policy charges 13 EUR per kg for anything over your booked weight, up to the next 10 kg band, if it’s caught at check-in.
  • Keep to three checked bags or fewer booked online. Wizz Air’s own baggage policy allows up to six per passenger, but only the first three can be added online; anything beyond that is settled at the airport at a higher rate.

What you can’t pack in a Wizz Air hold bag

Wizz Air’s checked baggage policy rules out cash, jewellery, electronics, travel documents, keys, medicine and perishable items from the hold, since Wizz Air won’t accept liability if they go missing or get damaged there. Carry valuables and documents with you instead. Liquids are also excluded from the hold list, but that’s not licence to pack them in your cabin bag freely either: the usual 100 ml security limit for hand luggage still applies, so anything larger needs checking against airport security rules rather than Wizz Air’s own baggage policy.

Wizz Air checked baggage: FAQs

Does the Wizz Air Basic fare include a checked bag?

No. Basic only includes a free under-seat bag. You have to add a hold bag separately, or book WIZZ Go or WIZZ Plus, both of which include one.

What weights can I choose for a Wizz Air checked bag?

Four options: 10 kg, 20 kg, 26 kg and 32 kg. You can only buy one 10 kg bag per passenger; the other three sizes can be combined, up to six checked items in total.

Is it cheaper to add a Wizz Air checked bag online or at the airport?

Online. Booking a bag closer to departure costs more, and adding one at the airport costs more again. Only the first three checked bags on a booking can be added online at all; anything beyond that has to be settled at the airport.

What happens if my Wizz Air checked bag is overweight?

You’ll pay a 13 EUR per kg surcharge at the airport for anything over the weight you booked, up to the next 10 kg band. Weighing your case at home before you travel avoids the surprise.

Can I add a checked bag after I’ve already booked?

Yes, through “Manage my booking” on the Wizz Air website or app, but it costs more than adding it at the time of booking. If you know you’ll need a hold bag, add it when you buy the flight.

Is WIZZ Go worth it just for the checked bag?

Not if a checked bag is all you need. On the booking we checked, a standalone 20 kg bag cost £20.58 less than upgrading to the next fare up for the same allowance. That upgrade earns its price if you also want seat selection and an extra cabin bag.
