June is when the Mediterranean moves properly into summer. Temperatures push into the mid-to-high twenties, the sea is warm enough for extended swimming, and the days are long. Prices are higher than May but not yet at the July-August school holiday peak. Dubrovnik, Mallorca, Rhodes and the Algarve all deliver in June, with different strengths depending on what you are looking for.

Dubrovnik
June is arguably the best month to visit Dubrovnik. Temperatures average 26°C, the Adriatic sea reaches 23°C and is excellent for swimming from the city’s rocky beaches and platforms, and the cruise ship crowds that define July and August have not yet arrived at their worst. The old city walls walk, one of the finest things you can do in any European city, is manageable in the morning heat without being debilitating.
The city does get busy in June, but the level of congestion is still human. Restaurants in the old town have availability, the cable car up Mount Srd has reasonable queues, and the beaches on nearby Lokrum Island are accessible. Book accommodation several months ahead as Dubrovnik fills up fast. The surrounding area, including the Elafiti Islands, is very beautiful and worth a day trip. Flights from the UK take around two and a half hours.
See our Croatia budget guide for a realistic picture of costs: Dubrovnik is one of the more expensive destinations in the region, but there are ways to manage it, particularly with self-catering accommodation outside the old town.
Mallorca
Mallorca in June is busy but not yet at its summer peak. Temperatures average 27°C, the sea sits around 23°C, and the island’s enormous variety of beaches and coves is fully accessible. Early June, before UK and European school holidays begin, is a particularly good window: prices are lower than July, the popular coves around Cala d’Or and the Formentor Peninsula are easier to reach, and the island’s interior towns and villages are genuinely pleasurable to visit.
Mallorca has a wider range of accommodation and character than many other Mediterranean islands. The north, around the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range and the town of Soller, is dramatically beautiful and noticeably cooler and quieter than the resort south. The capital Palma is a strong city break destination in its own right. Flights from UK airports take around two and a half hours on routes operated by Jet2, easyJet and British Airways.
For families, June before the school holidays end is a cost-effective window. Check our all-inclusive holidays guide for Mallorca resort options, and compare packages carefully as the range is wide.

Rhodes
Rhodes in June is one of the warmest Mediterranean island options available from the UK. Temperatures average 28°C with around twelve hours of sunshine per day, and the sea reaches 24°C, making it exceptional for swimming. The long beach at Faliraki on the east coast and the quieter bays around Lindos in the south are at their best in June before peak-season density sets in.
The Rhodes old town is a genuine highlight: the medieval walled city is one of the best preserved in Europe, and the Street of the Knights and the Palace of the Grand Master are worth at least a half-day. The hilltop village of Lindos, with its acropolis overlooking a perfect bay, is the other major sight. Both are far more enjoyable in June than in the intense heat of August. Flights from most UK airports take around three and a half hours.
Packages to Rhodes in June offer good value compared to the Greek mainland. See our flight booking guide for tips on getting the best fares, and check charter packages which often undercut scheduled airlines for Greek island routes.
Algarve, Portugal
The Algarve in June is fully in summer mode but retains a comfortable quality that distinguishes it from the most intense Mediterranean resorts. Average temperatures of 25°C are warm without being harsh, and the Atlantic breeze keeps beach days pleasant rather than oppressive. The sea sits around 20°C, which is cooler than the Mediterranean but swimmable for most visitors.
June is the last month before Portuguese school holidays and the July influx of Spanish visitors from across the border push prices sharply upward. The western Algarve around Lagos and Sagres, with its wilder Atlantic beaches and dramatic cliff scenery, is at its most rewarding in June: the crowds have not yet reached the levels of August. The Alentejo region to the north is also accessible as a day trip and is very beautiful in early summer.
Golfers will find June an excellent month: courses are in peak condition, green fees are lower than the shoulder season myth suggests, and the long evenings allow extended rounds. Check our Portugal travel guide for a breakdown of costs and what to expect across the different parts of the Algarve.
